Since the invention of the first modern e-cigarette in 2003, vaping has come a long way in its nearly two decades in the market. You now have more devices to choose from and more e-juice options. But, most importantly, the myths around vaping have been busted!

Although it has come a long way, some people are just finding out about it. If you've just stumbled upon vaping, the best place to start is by knowing your vapes and finding the right one for you – it could make or break your experience, so take your time and consider all factors for the best results. We've broken everything you need to know below to make it easier to find that perfect vape on your first try.

What are Vapes?

A vape or vaporizer is a device used to vaporize your vape juice for inhalation. Over the years, the available types and options of vapes have drastically increased. As a result, you can find vapes in all shapes and sizes to suit your preferences. Although some are pretty advanced, all share the same essential parts that make every vape functional:

  • Battery – The battery sits at the bottom of the vape. It's the powerhouse for the vape. It produces heat for the coil to activate. The size and capacity of the battery vary depending on the type of vape device you choose. Depending on the device, the battery can be rechargeable or pre-charged with no option of recharging.
  • Cartridge/pod/tank – The tank, pod, or cartridge holds the e-liquid you vape. The size and design differentiate between cartridges, pods, and tanks. But the function is the same.
  • Coil – The coil comprises a thin wire and wicking material. The wicking material absorbs the e-liquid from inside the tank, and the wire heats it and turns it into vapor when you press the button or inhale from the device.
  • Mouthpiece – This is the bit that you inhale from. It's a passage that connects the vapor from the coil to your mouth.

Regardless of the vape you choose, the working principle is the same and features these primary components. However, in some vapes, the components can look slightly different, but the function remains the same.

How to Vape

Most people have no problem learning how to vape. It's simple and fast. Most people master it in a few tries – with a few initial coughs, of course, but it is all auto-cruise after that. But it doesn't hurt to get acquainted, so here is a quick guide on vaping.

There are two methods of vaping. Each offers a different experience and appeals to a diverse crowd.

Mouth to Lung vaping

Former smokers prefer mouth-to-lung vaping. It involves inhaling the vapor into your mouth and then inhaling it into your lungs from your mouth. Most vapes designed for mouth-to-lung vaping have a restrictive airflow intended to mimic the experience of smoking a cigarette. This method is often associated with a harder throat hit because of inhaling a lot of vapor.

Direct to Lung vaping

DTL vaping is more common in vapers that don't have any experience with smoking. The airflow in DTL vapes is less restricted, and the throat hit is milder. In DTL, you inhale the vapor directly into your lungs. It delivers larger volumes into your lungs. It's an effective method when vaping cannabinoids because it delivers active ingredients directly into the lungs in large volumes.

In both methods, you start vaping by drawing from the mouthpiece, or drip tip. If your device has no buttons, it's an inhale-activated device, so you only need to inhale to activate it. For devices with a button (firing button), you need to press and hold the button when inhaling to activate the device and produce vapor.

Types of Vapes

When looking for a vape, you will come across multiple options. At times, the diversity of vapes can feel overwhelming, but there's a simpler way to categorize the vapes. First, you can classify the vapes by device type or type of vape juice. In the latter, there are nicotine vape juices and cannabinoid vape liquids. In this case, we will focus on the latter.

Types of Vapes by Device

The diversity of vaping has been a huge factor in its surge in popularity. Vapers, beginners included, have tons of options available. Finding the perfect vape might take some time, but it also ensures you get the ideal device regardless of your preferences and experience. Some of the most common types of vapes you can look into include the following:

Disposable vapes

Disposable vapes are beginner-friendly devices that come pre-filled and pre-charged. They are ready to vape out of the packaging. If you don't have any experience with a vape, disposable vapes are a perfect choice. They have no learning curve and don't require any maintenance. You simply vape, and once the vape juice is depleted, you dispose of the device and replace it with a new one hence the name – disposable vape.

Pros

  • They are easy to use
  • Highly portable
  • More affordable than cigarettes
  • No maintenance required

Cons

  • Sometimes too simple for avid vapers

Vape pens

Vape pens look like disposable vapes, only bigger. They come in two styles: 1) with their own refillable and reusable tanks and 2) with universal threading to interchangeably use pre-filled and disposable vape cartridges.

Vape pens make an excellent upgrade to disposable vapes. Their batteries are rechargeable for long-term use. They come with a bit more responsibilities but are still relatively forgiving.

Vape pens are stronger and produce more vapor and flavor than disposable vapes. Although larger, vape pens are small enough to fit into your pockets. You might struggle with refillable tanks at first. But once you get used to it, it's very easy.

Pros

  • Choosing your cannabinoid e-liquid opens you to a world of choices
  • The device is easy to use and more compact than mod devices
  • Most come with a 510 connection so that you can pair them with different tanks and coils
  • Lightweight and compact

Cons

  • Less vapor than pods and mods
  • Lower battery life than mods and pods

Pod systems

Pod kits or systems are another lightweight option that appeals to beginners and intermediate vapers. They come in two parts: the pod that contains the coil and the vape juice and a device containing the battery. The pod usually clips into the battery section and is held into place by strong magnets.

Pod kits range from simple, buttonless systems with fixed coils to more powerful and versatile devices with multiple modes that produce thick clouds of vapor and have superior flavor extraction.

Under pod kits, you will find closed and open systems. Closed systems have a fixed coil and a non-refillable pod, whereas open systems have refillable pods.

Pros

  • There’s a huge selection of pod kits to suit different needs and experiences
  • Easy to use and compact than mods
  • Open systems give you the freedom to choose from a wide range of vape juices

Cons

  •  They are lower powered than most mod devices

Mods

Mods are the most advanced vapes on the market. They come with high-capacity batteries and a plethora of features to customize your vaping experience. Mods are common among experienced users and require regular maintenance to keep them functioning at their best.

Like pods, the market for mods is versatile, with hundreds of devices spotting various features and designs. When looking into mods, you will be spoilt for choice. They come with a 510 connector so you can experiment with different tanks with a 510 connector. Mods produce thick clouds of vapor and have excellent flavor extraction as well.

Pros

  • They have long-lasting batteries. You can also choose between fixed or replaceable batteries
  • Lots of options for advanced vapers
  • Perfect for cloud chasers
  • Come with a 510 connection so that you can pair them with different compatible tanks

Cons

  • They have a steeper learning curve
  • They are not compact as pods, vape pens, or disposable vapes.

Types of Vapes by Cannabinoid

The second classification of vapes is by the type of vape juice. And if you're a hemp lover, we have vapes packed with various hemp-derived cannabinoids to help you feel and function better every day. If you're going for pre-filled vapes, you should also consider the type based on the cannabinoid. Available options include:

CBD

CBD is the second most popular cannabinoid, only preceded by Delta 9 THC. The most recognizable CBD benefit is that it delivers a wide range of natural wellness benefits without any elevating effects. It allows hemp fans who don't want the uplifting effects of some other cannabinoids to find something they can enjoy. Vaping CBD vape juice is thought to have numerous benefits, including calming and stress-support effects, because of its balancing properties. It is also believed to assist with healthier sleep habits.

At Koi CBD, we have CBD vape pens containing various CBD concentrations and different types of CBD, like broad-spectrum and full-spectrum CBD. We also have CBD vape juice blends that contain other beneficial hemp-based cannabinoids like CBG.

Delta 8 THC

Delta 8 THC is a mild version of Delta 9 THC. It's also called THC-lite because of its mild uplifting effects. Besides the mild uplifting and energizing effects, Delta 8 THC has numerous wellness benefits, like helping the mind calm down, improving sleep quality, and maintaining clarity and focus.

Our Delta 8 vape pens and Delta 8 carts come in various terpene strains and flavors and feature different blends to suit your preference. These are great options for vapers testing out uplifting cannabinoids and wanting something that eases them into the experience.

THC-O

THC-O or THC –O acetate is a powerful cannabinoid known for its potent uplifting effects. Most vapers say using THC-O vape carts is a more potent option than Delta 9 THC and is often sought by the most experienced cannabinoid vapers.

It has numerous therapeutic benefits and is often used when meditating. It's also thought to have natural properties and may help you unwind during stressful life moments.

HHC

HHC is a naturally occurring phytocannabinoid known for its elevating yet clear-minded benefits.

HHC is associated with many benefits, including a feeling of relaxation and focus that can help spark creativity or enhance hangouts with friends. Many people also report sleeping better after vaping HHC disposable vapes and HHC vape carts.

THC-P

THC-P is the most powerful discovered cannabinoid so far. It's primarily used to achieve intense relief and deep relaxation.

When you want to seriously unwind at the end of the day, THC-P is available in the form of THC-P vape cartridges and THC-P disposable vapes for fast effects.

Which Is the Best Type of Vape?

The best vape is objective. It varies from person to person depending on their vaping experience and expected results. Since no vape can appeal to all vapers and deliver the perfect experience for everyone, we recommend you consider the following factors to help you find the ideal vape for you.

Your vape experience

We have different vapes for vapers with varying experiences. Choosing the appropriate vape allows you to focus on your vaping experience instead of worrying about the device's operation. Also, advanced devices provide more potent effects and delivery that you find too strong. Choose a device that is easy to use for your experience level. You can gradually upgrade as you get more comfortable and settled into vaping.

Do you want any uplifting effects?

When choosing through pre-filled vape devices, it's important to consider whether you want a vape juice with uplifting effects or not. Some cannabinoids like Delta 8 THC, HHC, and THC-O have noticeably elevating effects, while CBD, CBG, and CBN products have no uplifting effects.

What are your desired results?

Why are you vaping? Are you looking for a sense of peace or natural relief? Or perhaps you want assistance when meditating or calming and relaxing effects? Each cannabinoid has its strong points and delivers certain benefits better. Therefore, when choosing your vape device, you should choose one with the cannabinoids that will provide the best experience for you and can deliver the anticipated results.

This includes hemp-derived cannabinoids like CBD, delta-8 THC, and many more.

While these hemp products are legal federally, guidelines can and do vary by state due to differing controlled substances laws. Some states have banned some hemp cannabinoids.
