Introducing Mom to THC: How It Went & How It’s Going

Estimated Read Time: 6 min

Ah, May — a month full of sunshine, new beginnings, and, apparently, a brand-new relationship between my mom and THC. This Mother's Day brought a twist neither of us saw coming.

If you grew up with parents born in the 50s or 60s, you already know the stigma they carry when it comes to cannabis. In their world, weed wasn’t wellness… it was rebellion. To my mom, cannabis has always been a triple threat: it stunted your energy, gave you the munchies, and was absolutely illegal, end of story. As far as she was concerned, there was no "good" way to approach it.

So, when I decided to introduce her to a new, more evolved cannabis lifestyle, let’s just say it took a little... finessing.

Mom’s History with THC

It turns out, my mom had tried cannabis once. Emphasis on once. Her memory of it? Anxiety, coughing, uncontrollable munchies, and absolutely nothing special about the experience. Picture a teenager in the late '70s, awkwardly holding a joint at a house party, coughing up a lung, and spending the next two hours thinking she forgot how to breathe. Not exactly the "euphoric freedom" experience the era promised.

Given that history, you can imagine her resistance when I started suggesting she revisit the world of THC. First, we had to have a real talk about how times have changed: the rise of hemp-derived THC, the 2018 Farm Bill, the major difference between hemp and marijuana, and (most importantly) the fact that these products are legal and designed for wellness, not the wild, smoke-filled living rooms she remembers. Baby steps, right?

The Topical Gateway

We had to start with something that didn’t feel "druggy." Enter CBD Topicals. My mom has minor wrist and hand aches, so I introduced her to Koi CBD Balm: no smoke, no edible, just a soothing balm to rub on sore spots.

Verdict: Instant fan.
She loved that it was simple, smelled great, and most importantly, worked

It was the first domino to fall. She realized that cannabis (in this case, hemp-derived CBD) could actually help her without changing her mental state. Progress!

Sleep Support with Nighttime Rest Gummies

Next up was sleep. Like many people in their 60s, my mom sometimes struggles with restless nights but didn’t want to dive into harsh sleep meds. So, I suggested she try Koi Nighttime Rest Gummies with CBD and melatonin.

Her Experience:
She loved them, but in moderation. She didn’t feel the need to take them every night, but keeps them by the bedside for those occasional, restless evenings.

This was another big win because taking something internally, rather than topically, was a huge step forward. And she appreciated feeling refreshed the next morning instead of groggy.

Finding Alcohol-Free Alternatives

As she’s getting older, my mom's goal is to phase out alcohol for better sleep, energy, heart health, and overall wellness. She doesn’t want to lose the fun social aspect of sipping something relaxing, just the sugar crashes and hangovers.

So, it was time to introduce mild THC options:

Naturally, she had questions (lots of them):

  • Is this legal? (Yes, thanks to hemp laws.)
  • Will it make me eat everything in sight? (Not if we control the dose or choose the right ones, like THCV.)
  • Will I lose my ability to hold a conversation? (Not with low doses, or in the right environment.)

Dosing Her Way into Comfort

Tinctures were an easy sell. The Delta 8 Tincture and CBD Naturals Tincture allowed her to control the experience drop by drop, and she could mix it into sparkling water or tea. She loved the ritual of making a “cocktail” without the actual alcohol, and the gentle mood lift afterward.

While the effects were subtle (sometimes almost undetectable), that was precisely what she needed to start feeling comfortable.

Graduation Day - Her First THC Gummy

Finally, with tinctures and Nighttime Gummies under her belt, she was ready for the real test: THC Gummies. I suggested we start with Koi Complete CBD+THC Gummies and THCV Gummies — two of the mildest, most fractionable options out there. They offer all the mood benefits with minimal risk of overwhelm.

At a recent family gathering, my mom ate half a Koi Complete Gummy—about 2.5mg of Delta 9 THC paired with about 13mg CBD.

How it went:

  • She stayed upbeat, light, and engaged
  • No energy crash
  • She genuinely enjoyed herself
  • She did notice feeling a little thirsty and a bit munchy, but we told her to stay hydrated and listen to her body

Honestly? She crushed it. It was such a proud moment.

How It’s Going Today

These days, my mom is officially that lady with a cute, curated cannabis collection:

  • CBD Travel Balm in her purse
  • Nighttime Rest Gummies in her bedside table
  • Koi Complete and THCV Gummies tucked in the kitchen cupboard
  • CBD and Delta 8 Tinctures are ready to mix with her mocktail

And the best part? She’s excited about it. She’s not just tolerating it…she’s embracing this new chapter of natural, plant-based wellness with open arms.

She’s found a sustainable, empowering alternative to the old ways of thinking, and Koi has made the transition smooth and trustworthy.

Onboarding my mom to THC was one of the most rewarding things I’ve done. And now, there’s no looking back.

If You’re Thinking About Introducing Your Mom to THC...

  • Start slow. Begin with topicals or CBD to show it's not about getting "high."
  • Educate first. Explain the legal landscape and wellness benefits clearly.
  • Respect their pace. Let them ease into it without pressure.
  • Focus on function. Help them understand how it can genuinely improve sleep, relaxation, pain, or social life.
  • Celebrate the wins! Every positive experience builds trust and excitement.

There’s no better time than May — a month all about growth and fresh starts to help the important women in your life discover new ways to feel good, live better, and stay vibrant.

Here’s to new beginnings, more laughter, and a little help from our favorite plant.
