What is CBD?

For a compound with the popularity that CBD enjoys, you would think most people know what it is. That’s not the case. Despite being widely used, CBD continues to be overlooked or misunderstood. Most of the confusion surrounding CBD comes from the fact that it comes from the same plant as its more famous cousin, THC.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a naturally occurring and the most prevalent active ingredient in the hemp plant. Hemp is one variety of cannabis, a genus of flowering plants that contain hundreds of compounds with extensive wellness benefits for the body.

Although closely related to THC, CBD stands out because it doesn’t produce any psychedelic effects. In addition, most CBD oil on the market comes from hemp plants – a strain of cannabis with a high yield of CBD and minimal THC.

Are CBD and THC the Same Compound?

CBD and THC share many similarities, but they are not the same compound. These similarities are what lead to CBD sometimes being confused with THC. Where the two differ are:

Chemical structure

CBD and THC have the same molecular structure. They both have 21 carbon, 30 hydrogen, and two oxygen atoms. Their chemical structure is also similar to the naturally-produced cannabinoids in the body. However, the arrangement of the atoms in each cannabinoid is different, which is where the difference in effects arises.

Source

CBD and THC are present in Cannabis Sativa plants and prevalent in different strains and different parts of the plant. The 2018 Farm Bill considers Cannabis Sativa plants with a THC yield of 0.3% or less as Hemp plants. This strain has a high CBD yield and is almost always used for all CBD products. THC, on the other hand, is extracted mainly from cannabis plants which generally have a high THC yield.

Effects and uses

Effects are the most effective differentiating factor between CBD and THC. THC carries the unique factor of causing euphoria while CBD doesn’t. CBD instead is used primarily to promote everyday wellness by supporting balance in the body. CBD’s exciting benefits for feeling and functioning better and its non-euphoric properties are the reasons behind its immense popularity.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD oil is an extract of the hemp plant that is mixed with a carrier oil to form CBD oil. CBD oils are some of the purest and most natural CBD products on the market, and because of their effectiveness and efficiency, they are also the most prevalent.

CBD oils come in various concentrations and flavors. Depending on the brand, you’ll find some CBD oils are made with other well-known natural ingredients known for their benefits to further compound the benefits of CBD oil. MCT oil, for example, has powerful nutritional benefits but also helps with the absorption of CBD and other plant compounds.

CBD oils generally come in a small glass bottle with a dropper top for easy administration and provide several ways of use, depending on your preference.

What Does CBD Oil Look Like?

CBD oil is a thick viscous oil that can range from clear to dark green depending on the type of CBD extract used and the additional ingredients used to make the oil. The type of carrier oil used to make the CBD oil also affects its color and viscosity. Vegetable oils like olive oil are darker on the CBD than the more refined carrier oils like MCT.

The most used carrier oils in CBD oil are hemp seed oil or MCT oils. The oils help make CBD oil easier to use and absorb in the body. Adding carrier oils also makes it easier for you to measure accurate servings of your preferred CBD products.

The Origins of CBD Oil

CBD and CBD oil might have grabbed mainstream attention, but they’ve been around for thousands of years. Cannabis is one of the earliest crops, with records dating back to 10,000 years.

Mankind has used the crop for food, medicine, and textiles for centuries. Hemp fibers were traditionally used to make ropes and fabrics. The seeds were for nutrition and the flowers and resin were for wellness purposes.

The first records of hemp oil were from 2737 BC when the Chinese emperor Shen-Nung used the compound topically for irritated skin. The emperor also used cannabis tea for his stomach issues. Queen Victoria’s doctor, J.R. Reynolds, prescribed her a CBD-rich strain to manage her menstrual discomfort.

Still, over the years, CBD has remained largely under the radar until recently, when researchers started looking into the compound and its natural health and wellness benefits. The legislation around CBD has also improved drastically, making CBD federally legal and also legally available in almost every state across the US.

How to Use CBD Oil

CBD oil is one of the easier CBD products to consume. It doesn’t require any particular technique or equipment, especially if you go with the kind that comes with a dropper cap.

All you have to do is squeeze the dropper of your bottle to measure out your CBD oil serving. The droppers are calibrated and make it simple to see how much CBD you’re taking. After measuring the right amount of CBD oil, you can decide to take it in one of three ways:

Sublingually

Taking CBD oil sublingually is the most effective method of taking CBD. You place the drop of CBD you have measured using the dropper under your tongue, where you hold them for 30-60 seconds. This region (called the buccal cavity) has a rich supply of blood capillary and a thin tissue that allows the CBD and other compounds to be absorbed directly into the bloodstream as you hold it in position.

After 30-60 seconds, you can swallow the remaining CBD oil to be absorbed through the digestion process.

Swallow it directly

If you’d rather not hold the CBD oil in your mouth, another option is to swallow it right away. While this method takes longer for the compounds to reach your body’s systems, it’s still effective. While this method saves you the unsavory taste of CBD, it has the slowest absorption time because the CBD must complete the digestion process and then be absorbed through the ileum like when you consume food or drink. However, once the effects kick in, they tend to stick around longer because the CBD is released into the bloodstream in small amounts over a longer period.

Add to your food or drink

Another option is to add CBD oil drops to your food or drink. You may choose this way to enhance your favorite recipes with the balancing benefits of CBD or to mask the taste and make CBD easier to consume.

Is CBD oil and Hemp Oil the Same Product?

In your search for CBD oil, you will most likely come across the term hemp oil. The two have a connection which makes them slightly confusing for those new to CBD who are encountering the terms for the first time. Some brands will even try to pass hemp oil as CBD oil, making it crucial to know the differences.

What is hemp oil?

Hemp oil or hemp seed oil is extracted from the seeds of the hemp plant. As such, it contains little to no CBD. Instead, it offers a robust and nutty flavor comprising around 70 – 90% polyunsaturated fatty acids, often called healthy acids. Hemp oil is rich in omegas, essential fatty acids, linoleic, linoleic acid, and tocopherols.

Hemp seed oil is an entirely different product from CBD oil. However, hemp oil can be one of the carrier oils that is mixed with CBD to make CBD oil easier to absorb into the bloodstream.

Hemp oil can be used as a culinary oil to enhance flavor, can be drizzled on vegetables, or made into salad dressing. It can also be taken from the spoon as a dietary supplement because of its high concentration of polyunsaturated omega-r and omega-6 fatty acids.

Types of CBD Oil

When choosing CBD oil, you’ll come across many brands offering CBD oil with varying benefits and effects depending on the ingredients and formula of the oil. However, CBD oil isn’t CBD oil without CBD. So the primary factor that you should always consider when choosing your CBD oil is CBD. To this end, CBD oil is made from three types of CBD extract. Their effectiveness and the effects you experience will depend on the type of CBD extract used to make the CBD oil. The three types of CBD oil based on CBD extract are:

Full-spectrum

Full-spectrum CBD extract is widely considered the most beneficial type of CBD oil because it retains the full list of cannabinoids found in the hemp plant and a variety of other terpenes, flavonoids, vitamins, and minerals. The list of compounds in full-spectrum CBD extracts and consequently CBD oil made from this type of CBD oil include:

  • Omega-3 fatty acids
  • Vitamins E, C and A
  • Iron and calcium
  • Phosphorous and zinc
  • Potassium and magnesium

The concentration of cannabinoids, flavonoids, and terpenes also contributes to the entourage effect because each compound can amplify the effects. Full-spectrum CBD oil also contains traces of THC. These are within the federal limit of 0.3%, so full-spectrum CBD remains federally legal.

CBD Isolate

CBD isolate is 99% pure CBD. It has been stripped of all the other cannabinoids, terpenes flavonoids, and other compounds. You only get pure, good, old, Cannabidiol.

Considering CBD isolate is missing many of the desirable ingredients, it doesn’t deliver the entourage effect as full-spectrum CBD does. Nonetheless, some people prefer CBD isolate because:

  • Isolates tend to be of higher potency and deliver higher amounts of CBD per serving.
  • CBD isolate has had detectable THC removed, making it ideal for athletes and other professionals who prefer to avoid it.
  • There is no taste or odor with CBD isolate. You can add it to your food or drink without impacting the flavor or the smell of what you add it to.

Broad-spectrum CBD

Broad-spectrum CBD is a middle-ground between full-spectrum and CBD isolate. Like full-spectrum CBD, this form of CBD extract contains hundreds of cannabinoids from the hemp plant, flavonoids, terpenes, minerals, and vitamins. But like CBD isolate, broad-spectrum CBD has had small amounts of THC removed. It makes it an excellent choice if you want to experience the entourage effect but don’t want to ingest any THC.

Broad-spectrum is potent with intense effects as well – almost as effective as full-spectrum CBD with numerous nutritional and wellness benefits.

Our post comparing the differences between full spectrum and broad spectrum CBD oil explains even more.

Potential Benefits of CBD Oil

While CBD oil doesn’t offer any uplifting effects, it has plenty of wellness and therapeutic benefits, which is why it has remained a high-profile cannabinoid among cannabis fans. Some of the benefits and effects that CBD oil offers include the following;

Calmness and Relaxation

Calmness and relaxation are the most common benefits of CBD oil. These benefits can help you become more sociable. For the ultimate calming, relaxing effects, you can take your Koi CBD Oil in the evening to help you rest before going to bed.

Discomfort Support

For the longest time, CBD has been taken for its physical discomfort support properties. CBD oil is one of the best ways to consume CBD for this benefit because it contains minimal additional ingredients and carries other cannabinoids that can enhance this effect. Cannabis fans often take CBD oil for various types of physical discomfort, including discomfort caused by strenuous exercise.

Digestion Support

CBD oil can potentially boost your digestive system by improving overall digestive tract health. Many CBD fans take CBD oil to promote gut health by maintaining the right conditions for healthy gut bacteria to flourish. A healthy gut system generally boosts your overall health. Taking CBD oil regularly could have this and other digestion-related benefits and could help manage symptoms such as nausea, constipation, and bloating.

Neuroprotection Support

The stress relief benefits of CBD oil have far-reaching effects, such as improving cell health and other factors affecting proper brain development and reducing various risks. CBD consumers have reported improved focus and concentration when taking CBD oil. These effects are more prevalent when taking CBD in low servings.

Nausea and Vomiting Alleviation

Like THC, CBD also has properties that might help alleviate feelings of nausea. These effects are more common when you take CBD oil in small servings. CBD oil also goes a long way in helping improve appetite.

Sleep Support

Sleep support is another benefit often associated with CBD oil, especially when taken in high amounts. The other wellness and therapeutic benefits of CBD oil, such as discomfort support, can contribute to better quality, uninterrupted sleep.

Why Koi CBD Oil?

CBD oil is a preferred way to deliver CBD into the bloodstream. It’s a simple yet effective product that thrives in diversity, allowing you to customize your CBD intake to match your preference.

Purity

CBD oil ranks as the purest way to consume CBD. Other products like CBD gummies, capsules, and vapables have additional ingredients to make the product work. CBD oils only contain the CBD itself, a carrier oil, and a natural flavor to enhance its absorption and taste. Fans interested in consuming CBD in its purest form will appreciate CBD oil. It’s as close as you can get to the hemp plant itself!

Fast Effects

CBD oil can deliver a fast onset of effects when consumed sublingually - when thehe CBD is absorbed through the network of capillaries under the tongue and inside the cheeks. The thin wall ensures rapid absorption, with most people starting to feel the effects in under 30 minutes. This method of consumption is ideal for consumers looking for rapid relief and various wellness and therapeutic benefits of CBD.

Prolonged Duration of Effects

Besides delivering a faster onset of effects, CBD oil, when consumed orally, also sustains the effects longer. This is possible because CBD oil is slowly broken down and released into the bloodstream in small amounts over several hours. As a result, you experience effects that ramp up over several hours, finally hitting their peak before wearing off gradually.

Various Methods of Consumption

There are multiple ways to take CBD oil. You can opt to take it orally by placing the CBD oil drops on top of your tongue. This is an enjoyable way to take CBD oil, especially when trying out our flavored options.

For a faster onset of effects, you should take CBD oil sublingually. This involves placing the CBD oil drops under the tongue. The CBD is absorbed through the capillary network and interior walls of the cheeks. This allows the CBD to bypass digestion and accelerate the effects.

You can also add CBD oil to your food or drink. This method is standard among new consumers who prefer to add it to familiar foods or drinks to make it easier to consume.

Easy Administration

CBD oil comes in an easy-to-use dropper. It has everything you need to consume it. When consuming CBD oil, you fill up the dropper with your desired amount of CBD oil, drop it under or on top of the tongue, or mix it in your food or drink, depending on your preferred intake method.

The simplicity of consuming CBD oil makes it appealing to all CBD consumers, both new and experienced.

Customizable Intake

You can tailor your intake right down to the drop with CBD oil.  It comes in a specified amount and concentration, so you can choose how many drops you want per serving. You can take as much or as little CBD as you need per serving.

Because of how personalized CBD effects can be, getting the dosage down to the tee is vital, and CBD oil allows you to do that without subdividing or breaking capsules and creating a mess at every serving.

Compact and Portable

CBD oil bottles are compact, lightweight, and portable. If you travel regularly, you can quickly bring your CBD oil with you because it doesn't take up much space in your luggage. The bottle can easily fit in your pocket or purse, ensuring you carry the oil everywhere you go without any hassle.

Available in Flavored Options

Koi has an excellent selection of CBD oil flavors that make it easy to consume. From Lemon Lime to Orange, Strawberry, and Peppermint,ur CBD oil comes in various tropical flavors for a delicious experience.

When is the Best Time to Take CBD Oil?

The best time to take CBD oil depends on why you're taking it. The timing might differ for each person, depending on your health, wellness, and productivity goals.  Here are some suggestions on the optimal time of the day to take your CBD oil for different situations;

First Thing in the Morning

If you're feeling stressed, have a hard time focusing at work, or want to create a morning routine that keeps you balanced and calm, the best time to take CBD oil should be in the morning.

Taking CBD oil in the morning can improve alertness and focus. The added benefit of taking CBD oil is that it doesn't come with the crash that caffeine is known for. It also has concentration benefits that might make you more productive during the day.

Before or After a Workout

You can also time your CBD oil intake to be before or after a workout. If you feel sore and tired after exercising, worry about reduced mobility and flexibility, or want to recover faster, the best time to take CBD oil is after the workout.

Also, taking CBD oil before a workout can help reduce inflammation, recovery time, and discomfort from intense workouts.

Before an Important Meeting

If you have an important meeting coming up that requires your full attention and is causing stress, taking CBD oil beforehand can help you calm down and relax. It might also help you feel confident and clear-minded at work.

In the Afternoon, During a Slump

Most people who start their day with a mug of coffee often experience a slump in the afternoon. If you find staying alert in the afternoon is a struggle or can't focus on work after a lunch break, you should consider scheduling your CBD oil intake during the afternoon. It should give you the jolt of energy and focus you need to work through the slump.

In the Evening

Taking CBD in the evening and right before bedtime can help you wind down from the day's events. It can help your racing mind slow down, make you feel more relaxed, and fall asleep more easily. You should also consider taking CBD oil in the evening if you struggle to sleep through the night.

As you can see, there’s no right or wrong time to take CBD oil. It all depends on why you are taking it and what you want to achieve.

Does CBD Oil Get You High?

Consuming our CBD oil doesn’t get you high, even when the oil is made from full-spectrum CBD extract. CBD doesn’t interact with CB1 receptors, and the amount of Delta 9 THC in the CBD oil isn’t enough to produce noticeable uplifting effects.

Will Taking CBD Oil Cause You to Fail a Drug Test?

It is possible to trigger a positive drug test after consuming CBD oil. This is possible when the CBD oil is made from full-spectrum CBD extract. Although the concentration of Delta 9 THC in the CBD oil isn’t enough to produce any uplifting effects, the drug tests can pick the slightest traces of THC in your body, triggering a positive result.

If you’re subjected to regular testing, we suggest going for broad-spectrum CBD oils and products that don’t contain any THC to avoid turning in positive results.

Tips for Using CBD Oil Safely

You can maximize the effectiveness of CBD oil by following these tips and taking it at the best time of the day for you. Some of the tips you should follow include;

Consistency

Like other habits, CBD works best when you take it consistently, not just when you need it. You get the best effects after taking CBD daily for at least a month. This helps to build the effects over time.

Establish a Routine

Once you start taking CBD oil, you should make it a part of your daily routine. Choose an established time when you want to take CBD oil and make it a habit to take it at the same time all the time.

Set and Monitor Your Goals

Use a journal to track how different CBD oil servings make you feel. Keep tracking your progress daily. This will help you determine whether you should adjust your intake.

Start Low and Go Slow

It's tempting to start with a high dose and get the full experience the first time. But that's not always how it goes. You must start building tolerance by starting low, sticking the same serving for at least a week, and then increasing slowly as you monitor your response.

How Much CBD Oil Should You Take?

The right amount of CBD oil for you can differ from someone else. Everyone can respond to CBD differently, and how much CBD you should take varies based on several factors:

  • Your reason for taking CBD
  • Genetic predispositions
  • CBD tolerance
  • Metabolism
  • Overall health
  • Biochemistry

Figuring out how much CBD oil you should take is straightforward and only takes a bit of time and patience. The precise 1 mL droppers that come with CBD oils make the process easier.

If you have a 250 mg CBD oil tincture in a 30ml bottle, every 1 mL dropper full contains 8.3 mg of CBD. A 500 mg CBD oil tincture in the same size bottle delivers 16.7 mg of CBD per 1 mL, and so on. Based on these values, available on your packaging, you can estimate the amount of CBD you take by using the number of full droppers as you dial in on the right amount of CBD you should take.

For those getting started on CBD, we recommend you go for a lower potency CBD oil of 8-20 mg per serving. Observe how your body responds over time and decide whether you want to increase or decrease your intake. This approach ensures you get the desired results and don’t take too much CBD too soon.

How to Differentiate High-quality CBD Oil from Low-quality CBD Oil

Not all CBD oil is the same and landing on a bottle of low-quality CBD oil is easier than you think. In an industry where more regulations are still needed, some manufacturers opt to cut corners. Knowing the difference between low-quality and high-quality CBD oil can help set you up for a great experience.

Source

The source of the CBD extract says a lot about the quality of the CBD oil you choose. Quality CBD oil comes from the best farms that closely observe federal regulations and use the best agricultural practices to grow organic hemp. Always ensure your preferred CBD oil brand sources its hemp from reputable and highly controlled industrial hemp farms.

Extraction

The extraction of CBD from the hemp plant plays a critical role in the quality of the final product. There are two main methods of CBD extraction:

Alcohol extraction

Alcohol extraction is an efficient CBD extraction method. But because of the interaction of the alcohol and the extract, it is considered a lower-quality method that passes some of the alcohol into the final product.

Supercritical CO2 extraction

Most reputable CBD oil companies use supercritical CO2 extraction to produce CBD oil. The process involves filtering the gas through temperature-controlled chambers under high pressure creating a super-critical phase. In this phase, CO2 behaves like a gas and a liquid, making it extremely efficient in striping chemicals out of the hemp plant.
