CBD (which stands for cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) are both cannabinoids derived from the cannabis plant. Although they are both found in marijuana plants, most people associate the common effects of marijuana to THC. Let’s take a closer look at some key differences between the two.
What is CBD?
With rise in legalized medical and recreational marijuana increasing in popularity across the US, the focus on other cannabinoids like CBD has increased. CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that has many positive health benefits and has been increasingly used to treat medical conditions. It is found in all marijuana plants but some specific strains of marijuana were bred specifically to be high in CBD, with only trace amounts of THC. This particular species of cannabis plant is more commonly known as hemp. CBD oil has a relaxing and calming effect for those who use it without causing a “high.” It has been used to treat epilepsy, anxiety, psychosis, chronic pain, mental and emotional disorders, and inflammation, among other medical conditions.
What is THC?
THC is the psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis that provides the “high” commonly associated with marijuana. Users who utilize it for recreational purposes may experience a feeling of euphoria, sleepiness, red eyes, and increased anxiety. It can also stimulate appetite, act as a pain reliever, and reduce nausea or vomiting. These common side effects have rendered it useful for medicinal purposes and have been used widely to help treat medical conditions including anorexia, glaucoma, PTSD, neuropathy, and sleeping disorders.
How are cannabinoids extracted?
Cannabinoids are fat soluble and are extracted from hemp or marijuana through oils. The main difference between CBD oil and THC oil are the varying levels of each component. CBD oil contains only trace amounts of THC, which will not get you high but still allow you to enjoy the many medicinal benefits. THC oil contains both compounds in varying levels depending on the plant species it was derived from.
