recent study proves effectives of using cbd for seizures
On May 25, 2017, NBC News posted an amazing article, titled “Cannabis Drug Reduces Seizures in Severe Epilepsy Cases” which showcases a study that proves cannibadiol (also known as “CBD”) actually reduces seizures in severe epilepsy cases. In their study, researchers enlisted 120 children from around the world with Dravet Syndrome – a rare and even lethal form of epilepsy that can cause prolonged seizures, which often leads to brain damage.
Currently there is no treatment for this syndrome, and “It’s hard to portray how serious and devastating this is,” Dr. Orrin Devinsky, director of the New York University Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, told NBC News.
To determine if CBD could provide benefits to their subjects, researchers performed a simple A/B test, in which they provided half the subjects with CBD over the course of 14 weeks, while the other half of the patients were given a placebo.
The results of this test are absolutely astounding.
According to a statement the research team made in the New England Journal of Medicine, “Seizure frequency dropped in the cannabidiol-treated group by 39 percent from nearly 12 convulsive seizures per month before the study to about six; three patients’ seizures stopped entirely.”
“Quite remarkably, 5 percent of the children in the active treatment group with CBD were completely seizure free during the 14 weeks of the trial,” Devinsky, further added. Many of these children were having dozens of seizures per month living in absolute torment, with really no remedy, and the benefits provided by CBD is absolutely remarkable! The children who had gained benefits from CBD have been transformed, Devinsky noted.
We know that this is just one case, and there is still a long way in the fight ahead to allow CBD to be widely accepted and utilized for medicinal purposes, but this is definitely a huge moment in the history of CBD that should be celebrated. “This trial represents the beginning of solid evidence for the use of cannabinoids in epilepsy,” Australian epilepsy expert Dr. Samuel Berkovic agrees.
With that being said, we are extremely hopeful for the future of CBD, and will continue to do everything we can to help people around the world gain access to high quality CBD so that they, just like the children in this study, may benefit as well.
