Does Delta 8 Make Your Eyes Red?

Red eyes have always been associated with smoking Delta 9 THC. It’s one of the tell-tale signs that you've just had yourself a nice little pick-me-up. Dry mouth and intense, sudden, and sedating effects are a few of the other common concerns that Delta 9 fans have. But do you experience the same side effects with Delta 8 THC? It's an excellent solution to some of the highlighted concerns, and unlike Delta 9, Delta 8 has more effects associated with stimulation and alertness.

It is less potent than Delta 9, which makes it ideal for new consumers. And because it's less potent, the undesirable effects also decline substantially. The only question that remains is if smoking Delta 8 THC will make your eyes red. Let’s get into it.

What is Delta 8?

The best place to start any cannabis discussion is by defining the cannabinoids in question. Although these cannabinoids are popular, they are misunderstood because of the myths and misinformation surrounding them.

Delta 8 THC is an analog of Delta 9 THC that also occurs naturally in marijuana and hemp plants. However, it's only present in small quantities and is usually manufactured through a process called isomerization.

Delta 8 has attracted the attention of cannabinoid fans of all experiences because of its unique benefits. Unlike Delta 9 (known for its potent uplifting effects), Delta 8 is more subtle with uplifting effects that edge on stimulation, focus, and alertness. It makes a great cannabinoid to kickstart your day.

It’s said to have half the potency of Delta 9, which has joking been given the moniker, “THC lite.” However, it does produce similar therapeutic benefits, but with a few differences.

Does Delta 8 THC Make Your Eyes Red?

Although Delta 8 and Delta 9 are different cannabinoids, they are known to produce the very similar benefits and side effects. One of the common side effects in question is the red eyes.

While this is not reported by everyone, many fans report having red eyes after smoking Delta 8 or Delta 9. Other associated side effects include itchy eyes and dilated pupils.

The severity or the extent of the redness of the eyes depends on your Delta 8 tolerance and dosage. Some studies have also suggested that genetics could make some consumers more susceptible to side effects like reddening of the eyes.

What Causes Your Eyes to Get Red?

Although red eyes can be an inconvenience in new cannabis lovers, it is a harmless side effect.

For the longest time, people thought that the main cause of red eyes was that cannabis smoke caused irritation to the eyes. However, this theory isn't correct because even people taking Delta 8 edibles exhibit the same side effects.

The answer is actually simpler than you would expect – Vasodilation!

Red, puffy eyes are one of the body's natural cardiovascular reactions to THC.

THC causes blood vessels to increase in diameter (vasodilation) by lowering blood pressure. When the capillaries dilate, they allow more blood to flow to the eye, reducing intraocular pressure. The increased blood flow to the eyes is what causes the eyes to appear red and bloodshot. The severity of the redness varies from person to person. This depends on various contributing factors including your health, age, sex, and blood pressure.

Usually, the redness subsides within a few hours after the effects of Delta 8 start wearing off. Your eyes will go back to their normal color until the next time you take Delta 8 or Delta 9 products.

Ways to Prevent Your Eyes from Getting Red

Although red eyes do not have significant effects on your health, you may have personal reasons for wanting to avoid this effect.

Usually, the redness will subside on its own after a few hours. But if you don't have the time to wait, there are a couple of tips you can try out to combat the redness.

Go for Products with Lower Delta 8 Concentration

Lowering your Delta 8 intake could help prevent your eyes from getting red. Even if they do, because of the low concentration of Delta 8, the redness might not be as noticeable and could be easier to get away with.

Eye Drops

Most cannabis users use eye drops to reduce and prevent redness. They are a great solution if you are around other people and you want to be discreet. Luckily, eye drops are readily available in local pharmacies and grocery stores.

The drops are easy to apply and highly effective. You simply take a drop or two before and after taking your Delta 8 products. After a few minutes, you can confidently enter a room, knowing your eyes are crystal clear. If you wear eye makeup, consider using the drops before wearing the makeup to avoid ruining it.

Use an Ice Pack

Another common trick is to use an ice pack. It makes sense if you know the science behind the reddening of the eyes. As explained earlier, eye reddening is caused by the dilation of the blood vessels in the eye. Applying a cold compress can help the vessels to constrict, reducing the flow of blood to the eyes and reducing the redness.

An ice pack or any cold compress can help to make the redness less noticeable. If you don't have ice packs, you can also use a wet towel or a bag of frozen vegetables and hold it against your eyes for several minutes.

Drink Water

This is not the most effective trick in the book, especially because it’s not guaranteed. However, being well-hydrated can never hurt. Being hydrated will only worsen the redness, along with causing other health issues.

While hydrating, ensure you stay away from alcohol and caffeine, especially before consuming hemp. This can help with your eyes and reduce dry mouth if you experience it.

Wait it Out

You probably don't want to hear this, but if all else fails, consider waiting it out. You can sit in a secluded corner for an hour or so until the effects subside, and then you can go back to mingling with the crowd.

Caffeine and Other Stimulants

This sounds contradicting, but coffee (of caffeine in general) can also help with vasoconstriction (the opposite of vasodilation). Another stimulant, called theobromine, found in dark chocolate, can help with same, reducing the reddening of your eyes. If you can find both, even better!

Wear Sunglasses

If it's sunny and you're outside, what better way to keep your red eyes from the curious public than with a stunning pair of glasses? It works and doesn't require any science. It only fails if you have to remove the glasses, and given the glaring sun, no one in their right mind would ask you to remove the glasses. Plus, you’re also protecting your eyes from the sun’s rays.

Closing Remarks

Red eyes are a common phenomenon among THC lovers. Although not everyone gets it, a majority of people report having red eyes at some point after taking Delta 9 or Delta 8 THC. It’s not life-threatening; just an indication that your Delta 8 THC is working. However, some people would prefer to not let others know they’re into Delta 8, especially in workplaces where all forms of THC are frowned upon. In such cases, you can use one of the above methods of preventing red eyes to keep your love for Delta 8 THC a secret. Worst case, you can wait until you’re in a safe space to use your Delta 8 products.
