Legal Status

Koi’s cannabinoid products are legal under the 2018 Farm Bill. Signed into law in December 2018, the federal legislation legalizes hemp, which the law defines as any part of the plant, including all derivatives, with no more than a 0.3 percent concentration of THC. This includes hemp-derived cannabinoids like CBD, delta-8 THC, and many more.

While these hemp products are legal federally, guidelines can and do vary by state due to differing controlled substances laws. Some states have banned some hemp cannabinoids.

What is CBD?

For a compound with the popularity that CBD enjoys, you would think most people know what it is. That’s not the case. Despite being widely used, CBD continues to be overlooked or misunderstood. Most of the confusion surrounding CBD comes from the fact that it comes from the same plant as its more famous cousin, THC.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a naturally occurring and the most prevalent active ingredient in the hemp plant. Hemp is one variety of cannabis, a genus of flowering plants that contain hundreds of compounds with extensive wellness benefits for the body.

Although closely related to THC, CBD stands out because it doesn’t produce any psychedelic effects. In addition, most CBD oil on the market comes from hemp plants – a strain of cannabis with a high yield of CBD and minimal THC.

Are CBD and THC the Same Compound?

CBD and THC share many similarities, but they are not the same compound. These similarities are what lead to CBD sometimes being confused with THC. Where the two differ are:

Chemical structure

CBD and THC have the same molecular structure. They both have 21 carbon, 30 hydrogen, and two oxygen atoms. Their chemical structure is also similar to the naturally-produced cannabinoids in the body. However, the arrangement of the atoms in each cannabinoid is different, which is where the difference in effects arises.

Source

CBD and THC are present in Cannabis Sativa plants and prevalent in different strains and different parts of the plant. The 2018 Farm Bill considers Cannabis Sativa plants with a THC yield of 0.3% or less as Hemp plants. This strain has a high CBD yield and is almost always used for all CBD products. THC, on the other hand, is extracted mainly from cannabis plants which generally have a high THC yield.

Effects and uses

Effects are the most effective differentiating factor between CBD and THC. THC carries the unique factor of causing euphoria while CBD doesn’t. CBD instead is used primarily to promote everyday wellness by supporting balance in the body. CBD’s exciting benefits for feeling and functioning better and its non-euphoric properties are the reasons behind its immense popularity.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD oil is an extract of the hemp plant that is mixed with a carrier oil to form CBD oil. CBD oils are some of the purest and most natural CBD products on the market, and because of their effectiveness and efficiency, they are also the most prevalent.

CBD oils come in various concentrations and flavors. Depending on the brand, you’ll find some CBD oils are made with other well-known natural ingredients known for their benefits to further compound the benefits of CBD oil. MCT oil, for example, has powerful nutritional benefits but also helps with the absorption of CBD and other plant compounds.

CBD oils generally come in a small glass bottle with a dropper top for easy administration and provide several ways of use, depending on your preference.

What Does CBD Oil Look Like?

CBD oil is a thick viscous oil that can range from clear to dark green depending on the type of CBD extract used and the additional ingredients used to make the oil. The type of carrier oil used to make the CBD oil also affects its color and viscosity. Vegetable oils like olive oil are darker on the CBD than the more refined carrier oils like MCT.

The most used carrier oils in CBD oil are hemp seed oil or MCT oils. The oils help make CBD oil easier to use and absorb in the body. Adding carrier oils also makes it easier for you to measure accurate servings of your preferred CBD products.

The Origins of CBD Oil

CBD and CBD oil might have grabbed mainstream attention, but they’ve been around for thousands of years. Cannabis is one of the earliest crops, with records dating back to 10,000 years.

Mankind has used the crop for food, medicine, and textiles for centuries. Hemp fibers were traditionally used to make ropes and fabrics. The seeds were for nutrition and the flowers and resin were for wellness purposes.

The first records of hemp oil were from 2737 BC when the Chinese emperor Shen-Nung used the compound topically for irritated skin. The emperor also used cannabis tea for his stomach issues. Queen Victoria’s doctor, J.R. Reynolds, prescribed her a CBD-rich strain to manage her menstrual discomfort.

Still, over the years, CBD has remained largely under the radar until recently, when researchers started looking into the compound and its natural health and wellness benefits. The legislation around CBD has also improved drastically, making CBD federally legal and also legally available in almost every state across the US.

How to Use CBD Oil

CBD oil is one of the easier CBD products to consume. It doesn’t require any particular technique or equipment, especially if you go with the kind that comes with a dropper cap.

All you have to do is squeeze the dropper of your bottle to measure out your CBD oil serving. The droppers are calibrated and make it simple to see how much CBD you’re taking. After measuring the right amount of CBD oil, you can decide to take it in one of three ways:

Sublingually

Taking CBD oil sublingually is the most effective method of taking CBD. You place the drop of CBD you have measured using the dropper under your tongue, where you hold them for 30-60 seconds. This region (called the buccal cavity) has a rich supply of blood capillary and a thin tissue that allows the CBD and other compounds to be absorbed directly into the bloodstream as you hold it in position.

After 30-60 seconds, you can swallow the remaining CBD oil to be absorbed through the digestion process.

Swallow it directly

If you’d rather not hold the CBD oil in your mouth, another option is to swallow it right away. While this method takes longer for the compounds to reach your body’s systems, it’s still effective. While this method saves you the unsavory taste of CBD, it has the slowest absorption time because the CBD must complete the digestion process and then be absorbed through the ileum like when you consume food or drink. However, once the effects kick in, they tend to stick around longer because the CBD is released into the bloodstream in small amounts over a longer period.

Add to your food or drink

Another option is to add CBD oil drops to your food or drink. You may choose this way to enhance your favorite recipes with the balancing benefits of CBD or to mask the taste and make CBD easier to consume.

Is CBD oil and Hemp Oil the Same Product?

In your search for CBD oil, you will most likely come across the term hemp oil. The two have a connection which makes them slightly confusing for those new to CBD who are encountering the terms for the first time. Some brands will even try to pass hemp oil as CBD oil, making it crucial to know the differences.

What is hemp oil?

Hemp oil or hemp seed oil is extracted from the seeds of the hemp plant. As such, it contains little to no CBD. Instead, it offers a robust and nutty flavor comprising around 70 – 90% polyunsaturated fatty acids, often called healthy acids. Hemp oil is rich in omegas, essential fatty acids, linoleic, linoleic acid, and tocopherols.

Hemp seed oil is an entirely different product from CBD oil. However, hemp oil can be one of the carrier oils that is mixed with CBD to make CBD oil easier to absorb into the bloodstream.

Hemp oil can be used as a culinary oil to enhance flavor, can be drizzled on vegetables, or made into salad dressing. It can also be taken from the spoon as a dietary supplement because of its high concentration of polyunsaturated omega-r and omega-6 fatty acids.

Types of CBD Oil

When choosing CBD oil, you’ll come across many brands offering CBD oil with varying benefits and effects depending on the ingredients and formula of the oil. However, CBD oil isn’t CBD oil without CBD. So the primary factor that you should always consider when choosing your CBD oil is CBD. To this end, CBD oil is made from three types of CBD extract. Their effectiveness and the effects you experience will depend on the type of CBD extract used to make the CBD oil. The three types of CBD oil based on CBD extract are:

Full-spectrum

Full-spectrum CBD extract is widely considered the most beneficial type of CBD oil because it retains the full list of cannabinoids found in the hemp plant and a variety of other terpenes, flavonoids, vitamins, and minerals. The list of compounds in full-spectrum CBD extracts and consequently CBD oil made from this type of CBD oil include:

  • Omega-3 fatty acids
  • Vitamins E, C and A
  • Iron and calcium
  • Phosphorous and zinc
  • Potassium and magnesium

The concentration of cannabinoids, flavonoids, and terpenes also contributes to the entourage effect because each compound can amplify the effects. Full-spectrum CBD oil also contains traces of THC. These are within the federal limit of 0.3%, so full-spectrum CBD remains federally legal.

CBD Isolate

CBD isolate is 99% pure CBD. It has been stripped of all the other cannabinoids, terpenes flavonoids, and other compounds. You only get pure, good, old, Cannabidiol.

Considering CBD isolate is missing many of the desirable ingredients, it doesn’t deliver the entourage effect as full-spectrum CBD does. Nonetheless, some people prefer CBD isolate because:

  • Isolates tend to be of higher potency and deliver higher amounts of CBD per serving.
  • CBD isolate has had detectable THC removed, making it ideal for athletes and other professionals who prefer to avoid it.
  • There is no taste or odor with CBD isolate. You can add it to your food or drink without impacting the flavor or the smell of what you add it to.

Broad-spectrum CBD

Broad-spectrum CBD is a middle-ground between full-spectrum and CBD isolate. Like full-spectrum CBD, this form of CBD extract contains hundreds of cannabinoids from the hemp plant, flavonoids, terpenes, minerals, and vitamins. But like CBD isolate, broad-spectrum CBD has had small amounts of THC removed. It makes it an excellent choice if you want to experience the entourage effect but don’t want to ingest any THC.

Broad-spectrum is potent with intense effects as well – almost as effective as full-spectrum CBD with numerous nutritional and wellness benefits.

Our post comparing the differences between full spectrum and broad spectrum CBD oil explains even more.

How Much CBD Oil Should You Take?

The right amount of CBD oil for you can differ from someone else. Everyone can respond to CBD differently, and how much CBD you should take varies based on several factors:

  • Your reason for taking CBD
  • Genetic predispositions
  • CBD tolerance
  • Metabolism
  • Overall health
  • Biochemistry

Figuring out how much CBD oil you should take is straightforward and only takes a bit of time and patience. The precise 1 mL droppers that come with CBD oils make the process easier.

If you have a 250 mg CBD oil tincture in a 30ml bottle, every 1 mL dropper full contains 8.3 mg of CBD. A 500 mg CBD oil tincture in the same size bottle delivers 16.7 mg of CBD per 1 mL, and so on. Based on these values, available on your packaging, you can estimate the amount of CBD you take by using the number of full droppers as you dial in on the right amount of CBD you should take.

For those getting started on CBD, we recommend you go for a lower potency CBD oil of 8-20 mg per serving. Observe how your body responds over time and decide whether you want to increase or decrease your intake. This approach ensures you get the desired results and don’t take too much CBD too soon.

How to Differentiate High-quality CBD Oil from Low-quality CBD Oil

Not all CBD oil is the same and landing on a bottle of low-quality CBD oil is easier than you think. In an industry where more regulations are still needed, some manufacturers opt to cut corners. Knowing the difference between low-quality and high-quality CBD oil can help set you up for a great experience.

Source

The source of the CBD extract says a lot about the quality of the CBD oil you choose. Quality CBD oil comes from the best farms that closely observe federal regulations and use the best agricultural practices to grow organic hemp. Always ensure your preferred CBD oil brand sources its hemp from reputable and highly controlled industrial hemp farms.

Extraction

The extraction of CBD from the hemp plant plays a critical role in the quality of the final product. There are two main methods of CBD extraction:

Alcohol extraction

Alcohol extraction is an efficient CBD extraction method. But because of the interaction of the alcohol and the extract, it is considered a lower-quality method that passes some of the alcohol into the final product.

Supercritical CO2 extraction

Most reputable CBD oil companies use supercritical CO2 extraction to produce CBD oil. The process involves filtering the gas through temperature-controlled chambers under high pressure creating a super-critical phase. In this phase, CO2 behaves like a gas and a liquid, making it extremely efficient in striping chemicals out of the hemp plant.
